CUMBERLAND, Md. A new marathon race planned for next spring in western Maryland will take runners over a section of the Great Allegheny Passage hiking-and-biking trail. Organizer Kevin Spradlin says the Mountain Maryland Marathon on April 19 will feature a 1,900-foot gain in elevation from Cumberland to Frostburg along Alternate U.S. 40. Spradlin says the grade is so gradual that runners will barely notice they're going uphill. The return trip will put runners on the Maryland section of the Great Allegheny Passage. The trail is made of hard-packed gravel and carries bicycle riders from near Pittsburgh to Cumberland.
